Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Good work experience as an entry level employee. Benefits are good. Good safety standards. Good work environment with many locations across the US. Strong company.

I love it here!

I am not sure what company that others who have reviewed it were working for but this place is great!  Understanding bosses, personable coworkers, flexible schedules, and there are snacks and games for when we need a break from it all.  Yes, it can get stressful at times but what job doesn't get stressful? It is definitely not that way all the time. We just came through a pandemic which was difficult for everyone, and I've seen amazing improvements overall since I've been working here and I love it. There is room for growth when a desire is demonstrated and maintaining excellent safety standards is rewarded with spot bonuses along the way.

Pros

Understanding bosses and coworkers, flexibility, snacks, games

Cons

Industry has peaks and valleys

good company to work for if you have a good manager

nothing bad about Terracon. However management can be very challenging. i would change lots of the existing leadership to make it more open to more people and stop lots of ethics violation

Good place to learn, not to grow

Started as an assistant scientist and learned a lot. Management is very reluctant to give decent pay, raises, or bonuses. Benefits are good. Takes a long time to get that promotion or raise. Would not recommend as a place to grow in your career. Seems like they would rather hire someone than invest in hard working employees they already have.

Secure job, not much room to advance.

Good workplace to get a foot in the door. Extremely hard to lose the job, so long as you do what you're told and learn from your mistakes. Advancement is an option, but extremely time consuming. 2-3 years of coursework for minimal hourly bonuses (going up $2-3 an hour for a course that could take several years), so expect starting pay not to increase. Apparently advancement is handled differently for salary employees. High turnover given work-life balance being poor. Schedule is given day-of or hours prior, as opposed to a set or advance schedule.

Everyone is expendable

Managerial skills have dropped. Be a 'yes' person and you will go far. Challenge of authority is discouraged. Preaches mental breaks, but on your own time.

Good environment poor management

Worked here for 1.5 years and got my hours cut, lots of favoritism in the office. Hard to get jobs and call you 8pm the night before. Poorly ran as whole.

Productive and great place to work

Great management that truly cares about its employees. They are understanding when you need time off. Saftey is their #1 priority. Pay is a little low but definitely a great place to work.

Unless desperate, don't work at the DSM office

They preach safety, culture, and all that glitters. Sadly it's just a dog and pony show, with a lot of expensive words but zero substance. The DSM office is toxic, the managers are never there, have no clue how to do their own job and absolutely don't lead anything or anyone. The pay is meager for what you're expected to do, you will be tasked with the job of 3 people and get burnt out fast. They don't support their military staff, you are not allowed to take down season unemployment but your hours will be slashed including office staff. The benefits are ridiculously expensive and cover nothing, they can't keep help for a reason.

Pros

Its a free for all with no managers around

Cons

Toxic management and people

Is Indeed your favorite place to learn about companies?

Great resources throughout the company

The company is innovative and definitely has plenty of knowledgeable people to learn from. Can be too corporate at times. Pay is on the low side but being employee-owned is a benefit.

Work/Life Balance is a joke to this company

They have posters on all the work areas and tell you over and over the company is Employee Owned. So you would think they would be more respectful to employees. Wrong. You do not know what your work schedule will be from day to day. They will send an email at the end of the business day with the following work day start time and job tasks for the day, but you will never know what time you will be done with each task, some will take longer some will be cancelled.

Place to grow and learn

The office i work has a hybrid culture. My work is flexible with work from home up to 2 days a week and we have a plenty of backlog to last several months.

There really is no ladder to climb

In saying there is no ladder to climb, there isn’t. You could be sitting there for years knocking it out of the park when a management position opens up, and you would never be considered because someone from the outside with less knowledge is almost always going to be brought in, and chances are it’s going to be a joke. Also The solution to every problem within this company is to pull rank.

High staff turnover

High staff turnover due to long and irregular working hours, financial underestimating on proposals leads to razor thin profit margins with jobs frequently going over budget, a confusing incentive scheme for bonuses, poor work-life balance, corporate management appears to be the root cause of dissatisfaction among regional managers and staff.

Pros

Training is paid for.

Cons

Health insurance is of very poor quality for the price.

Great company. Bad individual offices

The individual offices are a representation of their leaders. Check about high turnover in an office before you sign on. Overall the company is amazing. But there are bad apples here and there and if you get in under one of them it is not fun. Look for a fun office. Interview the staff/potential co-workers.

Pros

Great overall benefits package. Most affordable medical plans.

Cons

Tons of busywork associated with big companies. Some bad apple managers.

Laidback work culture

High consideration for work life balance. Good place to learn more about the field and more about the company as a whole. Strong support from management.

Good place to start

You will not make much money unless you become a Principal. Get some good experience here and then go somewhere else. When things get slow they are quick to fire.

Pros

Interesting Projects

Cons

Low Pay

Be prepared to be the lowest paid person on jobsite.

Company is good and has a strong safety culture. However, pay is pretty horrible when you consider you can make more flipping burgers then doing construction inspections.

What is the best part of working at the company?Great pay. Lots of good people as long as you work on the material side or in the office. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Working with a “driller” who will not help you whatsoever and tell you you’re worthless no matter how much you accomplish. The only time teamwork would occur was when a office manager or some sort of client was on site (of course). I put myself through heck and swallowed my pride very deeply for that paycheck. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Being part of a crew of field technicians was great! Being on the exploration side was another storyWhat is a typical day like for you at the company?Working yourself to death from sun up to sun down. You will do every physical part of the job on your own. No matter what you accomplish or how hard you work, you will not receive appropriate breaks, nor respect from the driller. It could be 110 degrees out and you still may only receive a 15 minute break in a 12 hour day

Big projects that you can learn from.

OVer all it is a good place to learn. They have some big projects, however, the pay is not good and you have to work long hours. Management is terrible.
