Job Purpose

The Medical & Hazardous Waste Incineration Plant Operations Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising all plant operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant treatment and disposal of medical and hazardous waste. The role ensures continuous plant availability, regulatory compliance, operational excellence, cost control, and personnel development while maintaining high standards of health, safety, and environmental protection.

Key Responsibilities

Plant Operations

  • Manage day-to-day operation of medical and hazardous waste incineration facilities.
  • Ensure continuous, safe, and efficient plant operation on a 24/7 basis.
  • Supervise waste reception, segregation, storage, feeding, combustion, ash handling, and emission control systems.
  • Optimize incinerator performance and fuel consumption.
  • Monitor plant operating parameters and process efficiency.
  • Coordinate scheduled shutdowns and plant start-ups.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and emission standards.
  • Enforce occupational health and safety procedures.
  • Lead emergency response activities.
  • Conduct safety audits and incident investigations.
  • Promote a strong safety culture across the facility.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental, hazardous waste, and occupational safety regulations.
  • Maintain operating permits and licenses.
  • Prepare regulatory reports and maintain operational records.
  • Coordinate inspections by environmental authorities.

Maintenance Management

  • Coordinate preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance.
  • Work closely with maintenance teams to maximize equipment availability.
  • Minimize plant downtime.
  • Monitor reliability of:
  • Incinerators
  • Air pollution control systems
  • Boilers
  • Scrubbers
  • Bag filters
  • ID/FD fans
  • Waste feeding systems
  • Ash handling equipment

Budget & Cost Control

  • Prepare annual operating budgets.
  • Monitor operating expenses.
  • Control maintenance costs.
  • Optimize manpower utilization.
  • Support procurement of spare parts and consumables.

Customer & Stakeholder Management

  • Coordinate with hospitals, healthcare facilities, industries, waste generators, transport contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Resolve operational issues affecting customer service.
  • Support audits and customer inspections.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in:
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Process Engineering
  • Master's degree is an advantage.

Experience

  • 8–10+ years of experience in:
  • Medical waste treatment
  • Hazardous waste treatment
  • Incineration plants
  • Waste-to-Energy (WtE)
  • Thermal treatment facilities
  • Minimum 5 years in a managerial or supervisory role.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time plant-based position.
  • May require shift coverage and emergency call-outs.
  • Exposure to industrial equipment, heat, noise, and hazardous materials.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
